Nascar Daytona Crash: Ten-Car Crash At Daytona Track Injures 29 [00:51]
On the last lap of the Nationwide Nascar race, competitor Regan Smith was turned sideways and took out several racers behind him, causing a pile-up. Large chunks of driver Kyle Larson's car landed in the grandstands, and one of his tyres appeared to fly over the fence and into the stands. His car went airborne when it hit the pile-up and it was flung into the fence that separates the track from the seats. The car itself had its entire front end sheared off, with the burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence. Larson managed to climb out of the wreckage afterwards unscathed. Race officials said 14 fans were taken to hospital, with another 14 being treated on the scene at the Florida track. Driver Michael Annett, of the Richard Petty Motorsports team, was being treated in hospital for bruising on his chest, his team said. Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports national columnist, spoke to fans in the damaged grandstand.

NASCAR'S : Huge multiple car Crash | WreckMars Nationwide At Daytona [00:51]
At least 28 fans were injured after a violent crash at Daytona International Speedway Saturday caused debris from a race car to fly into the grandstands. Fourteen were taken to area hospitals. Two are listed in critical condition. One of those has a life-threatening head injury, the other is a child. Both are stable, according to Byron Cogdell, a spokesman at Halifax Health. At least nine ambulances rushed to the rear of the Campbell Grandstand as emergency workers scurried to help fans injured in the rows closest to the track after Kyle Larson's car violently tore through the fence, leaving his engine and tire behind. Other safety workers evacuated the scene of race fans. In the front row of the grandstand about 20 feet past where Larson's engine had stuck, emergency responders wearing firesuits and helmets tended to several fans sitting on old metal chairbacks. Stretchers were being rolled in from ambulances arriving behind the grandstands while police and other track security ushered fans from the scene. "We responded appropriately according to our safety protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately," track president Joie Chitwood said. "We're in the process of repairs to the facility and will be ready to go racing tomorrow." The accident occurred as drivers raced toward the checkered flag of the Drive4COPD 300 in NASCAR's Nationwide Series. Regan Smith was leading the race, but got turned as he approached the finish line. That sparked a ...

Fan Runs Onto Racetrack [00:50]
A man ran across the track during the stretch run of the feature race at Del Mar on Thursday, barely escaping contact with several horses that were driving for the finish line. The man, carrying a duffel bag filled with personal belongings, jumped the outer rail as the horses reached the top of the stretch. As the field got closer, he began running in the same direction as the horses and, about 30 yards before the wire, with Chris McCarron trying to avoid him aboard the race winner, Sea Of Serenity, the man flung the bag behind him, into the path of another horse. The second-place finisher, Factual Attraction, missed the man by inches, and he was then missed by two other trailing horses--Toga Toga Toga and Regal Gentry--who simultaneously passed on either side of him. The man, later identified as Russell Howard Caputo, 38, a onetime resident of Beverly Hills, then jumped the inner rail, ran across the turf course and was apprehended near the tote board by a member of the starting-gate crew and taken into custody. The name of the race was the Royal Order of Jesters Purse. William Knowles, director of security for the track, said Caputo was turned over to the San Diego County sheriff's office. "There are indications," Knowles said, "that he's suffering emotional problems. When he was taken into custody, he made vague references to self-destruction. He said something about doing it on the train, then said that he wanted to do it on the track." A sheriff's spokeswoman ...

Dettori Suspended From Horse Racing For Six Months [00:16]
The three-times British champion jockey is suspended after testing positive for a banned substance earlier this year. Frankie Dettori has been suspended from riding for six months after being found guilty of taking a banned substance. The three-times British champion jockey tested positive following a routine examination at Longchamp racecourse in France on September 16. French horseracing's governing body France Galop issued the ban following a recent hearing, and the British Horseracing Authority is likely to follow suit. The 41-year-old's solicitor Christopher Stewart-Moore said the jockey "fully accepts" the ban, which lasts until May 19. "France Galop have today announced their finding Frankie Dettori has committed a breach of their rules relating to prohibited substances," said Mr Stewart-Moore. "I have spoken to Frankie since the announcement was made and he has told me he fully accepts France Galop's decision. He also accepts that he has let down the sport he loves and all those associated with it, as well as the wider public. "But most of all, and this is his greatest regret, he has let down his wife and children." Mr Stewart-Moore said Dettori was "enormously grateful" for the support of his fans, adding: "Racing has been good to Frankie and he knows that his privileged position brings with it responsibility. "For this reason he is determined to rebuild his reputation when he returns to the saddle. Frankie could make excuses. He has, after all, regularly been ...

NASCAR fan is hit and killed by lightning strike in the parking lot of Pocono Raceway (my response) [01:11]
(my response) Brian Zimmerman, of Moosic, Pa., died as he stood near his car in the parking lot of Pocono Raceway, according to the Monroe County coroner. A woman who answered the phone at Zimmerman's home declined comment. Nine other people were injured during Sunday's violent storm, though it wasn't immediately clear how many might have been struck by lightning. One who had been listed Sunday night in critical condition was upgraded to stable. The crowd of about 85000 was advised over public address systems and through social media to take cover Sunday afternoon when lightning and heavy rain hit the track near the end of the race. But some fans posted on the raceway's Facebook page that they never heard the weather-related announcements. NASCAR spokesman Dave Higdon said Monday that officials are reviewing how the track carried out its emergency procedures. He cautioned against rushing to judgment until all the facts are known. ''Anytime something like this happens, we make sure we look at it again and see if there's anything we should have done different,'' Higdon said. ''It's never a good day for us when someone passes and people are hurt.'' Pocono Raceway president and CEO Brandon Igdalsky expressed sorrow at a news conference Monday afternoon at the track, where a large US flag flew at half-staff. ''Fans are like family to us,'' Igdalsky said, noting that Zimmerman had been coming to races for several years with his friends. He added that he planned to contact ...
