Desert Orchid (April 11, 1979 -- November 13, 2006), known as Dessie, was an English racehorse. The grey achieved iconic status within National Hunt racing, where he was much loved by supporters for his front-running attacking style, iron will and extreme versatility. He was rated the 5th best National Hunt horse of all time by Timeform. He is considered by many as the greatest jumper of all time and also the greatest front runner in history. Here he is winning the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup with jockey Simon Sherwood.

Leaving from post position 12, the near-white son of Tapit was hung out four wide going round the first turn as King and Crusader emerged to tow the field of 13 through an opening quarter-mile in 23.68 seconds. Settling comfortably off the pacesetter on the backside as the half went in 47.51 and three-quarters in 1:11.79, Hansen moved up three-wide to challenge for the lead on the turn, easily taking over once into the stretch and drawing clear for the decision over My Adonis.

Grade 1 winners The Apache and Seal fought out a mighty finish in the 6th race at Turffontein on the 20th December 2011 to produce a Team G one-two exacta. The Apache, whose (Equus) champion status was largely ignored by bookmakers offering 7/2 a win earlier on in the day, shortened late to start at 19/10 behind odds-on favourite Link Man who was not disgraced in 3rd spot.
