The Triple Crown of horse racing slipped away from Real Quiet in the final strides of the Belmont Stakes yesterday, when he was run down and beaten by a nose by Victory Gallop, the horse who chased him home in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. They staged a roaring duel down the homestretch on a brilliantly sunny and cool afternoon before 80162 fans at Belmont Park, the second-largest crowd to see the race in its 130 runnings. And they saw a Belmont Stakes of show-stopping drama, the closest in the 20 years since Affirmed nipped Alydar by a head to become the 11th horse to win the Triple Crown. No horse has completed a sweep since then. Real Quiet became the 14th to lose it in the final race in the series, and lost by the narrowest margin among those 14. Afterward, the stewards suggested that he might have been disqualified if he had won the race because he brushed Victory Gallop twice in the homestretch. For the second year in a row, the trainer Bob Baffert was foiled on the threshold of completing a Triple Crown. He was thwarted last year when Silver Charm lost the Belmont to Touch Gold by three-quarters of a length. He was foiled again this year when Real Quiet was nipped by Victory Gallop. And in one of those twists of fortune, Silver Charm's losing jockey, Gary Stevens, became the winning jockey this year on Victory Gallop.
