2011 Tom Fool (G3) - Calibrachoa [01:23]
Calibrachoa collected his third consecutive stakes victory and second in a graded race on Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack when he closed into a hot pace to win the 36th running of the Grade 3, $150000 Tom Fool Handicap. Sent off as the 1-2 favorite, Calibrachoa settled well back in third as entrymate Have You Ever and Deputy Daney opened up on the field, hurrying through a quarter in 21.63 and a half-mile in 44.03. Gaining ground as the front runners lost momentum, Calibrachoa easily overtook Deputy Daney just past the eighth pole and drew off to win by 4 ½ lengths. His final time for six furlongs over Aqueduct's fast inner track was 1:09.67. "I was trying to slow him down as much as I could," said jockey Ramon Dominguez, who picked up his second stakes victory on the card in the Tom Fool. "I knew the horses in front of me were going extremely fast, and I just didn't want to fall into chasing and then having someone close on me. I certainly at no point in the race wanted someone to take my position, but at the same time I was trying to reserve as much as I could. I was actually surprised at how much they opened on me. My horse finished up pretty strong." It was the third straight stakes victory over the inner track for the 4-year-old son of Southern Image, who won the $65000 Gravesend on December 18 and the Grade 3 Toboggan on January 22. Owner Mike Repole claimed the colt for $40000 out of a winning effort at the Big A on November 18.

New York Watch: Fort Hughes [01:19]
It had been nearly 13 months since trainer Kiaran McLaughlin had sent out a debut winner on the dirt, but Fort Hughes' impressive score on Sunday at Belmont Park made it worth the wait. With the victory, Fort Hughes joins the New York watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga. His page is located at. Fort Hughes, a Darley Stable homebred, quickly seized the lead from post 1 and was pressed by Rift through fractions of 22.34 and 45.24. Jockey Alex Solis flashed the whip at Fort Hughes in the stretch, and that's all the encouragement the 7-1 shot needed to pull away to a 5 ½-length victory. The final time for 5 ½ furlongs was 1:02.98, 0.72 seconds off the track record set by Mike's Classic, a 5-year-old, in 2004. While Darley had high expectations for Fort Hughes from the beginning, McLaughlin admitted he didn't expect such a strong performance from the chestnut colt. "He didn't show brilliant speed in the morning and we didn't love him because he hadn't worked lights out," said McLaughlin. "We train a lot of them on the Greentree Polytrack and it can be hard to get a reading on them first time out. We are happy and surprised that he ran so well. I mean, that was a serious race! I don't know what we do from here, but we are happy he won so impressively." Fort Hughes becomes the 11th winner for his freshman sire Henny Hughes, whom McLaughlin trained for Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al Maktoum's ...

Belmont Park paddock area and Secretariat statue [00:28]
Quick view of what it looks like from the Belmont paddock on an empty day. Actually there were a handful of fans walking around and wagering on races via OTB. I'm surprised they open the entire facility for OTB. No wonder NYRA is in trouble.

1999 Haskell Invitational Grade I [04:49]
It was a three-wide move on the last turn, made with parabolic precision, that not only dusted Cat Thief and Forestry, but perhaps also kicked dirt on any sentiments that Charismatic had won the crown as the best 3-year-old in the nation. The horse responsible was Menifee. His hardly surprised rider was Pat Day, in the $1 million Grade I Haskell Invitational today at Monmouth Park. What does it mean? That three at-the-wire finishes can be deceptive. That anyone who penciled in Charismatic, the courageous Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, as the best of his generation needs an eraser. That Menifee's trainer, Elliott Walden, concluded a day that those with professional horse fantasies dream about. Less than an hour before Menifee ran down a pair of West Coast speedsters here, Walden's Ecton Park romped in the mud and ran away from a Grade II Jim Dandy field at Saratoga Springs. ''I knew he had won at the eighth pole,'' Walden said of Menifee's fifth career victory, his third this year, to move the colt's earnings past $1.5 million. The 33056 people who braved gloomy skies and early-morning showers may not have been so sure. The Derby and Preakness runner-up, Menifee still trailed a game Cat Thief, who was neck to neck with a determined Forestry in the stretch. ''I felt very good all the way, to be honest with you,'' said Day, who won his first Haskell and ran Menifee's record over the second-place Cat Thief to 5-0. ''I think if we run three more times, Menifee would beat ...
