Discreetly Mine-2010 King's Bishop Stakes [01:46]
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Saturday's $250000 King's Bishop Stakes may not have gone exactly as Todd Pletcher would have envisioned it earlier in the day. But the end result was just what the meet's leading trainer was looking for after Discreetly Mine led throughout to post a 1 1/4-length decision over a game Bank Merger in the Grade 1 dash for 3-year-olds. Discreetly Mine had used stalking tactics to win his last two starts, and that was the same type of trip Pletcher was expecting again in the seven-furlong King's Bishop. But after it became readily apparent the main track was speed-biased through the afternoon, Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez opted to alter Discreetly Mine's usual running style and put the versatile colt right on the lead if possible. That strategy ultimately paid big dividends. Breaking alertly, Discreetly Mine was able to outrun the speedy Bulldogger to the lead from the inside, setting a lively pace of 21.90 and 44.11 seconds in the process. Discreetly Mine shook off his early pursuer entering the stretch but then had to fend off serious challenges from Bank Merger and Latigo Shore before ultimately edging clear at the end. Bank Merger, who entered the race undefeated in two previous starts, rallied four wide off the final turn and continued resolutely to finish second. Latigo Shore was another two lengths further back in third after coming widest into the stretch. D' Funnybone, the last horse to defeat Discreetly Mine, in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens ...

2009 Dubai World Cup - WELL ARMED [02:57]
Front-running Well Armed, under a snug hold by jockey Aaron Gryder, cut loose at the head of the straight and romped to a record 14-length victory in the $6 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 28, the final race to be run at Nad al Sheba. On a main track that was favoring speed throughout the evening, WinStar Farm's homebred son of Tiznow was never threatened as he rolled to victory for trainer Eoin Harty at US odds of 9-1. Well Armed was in a similar position at Nad al Sheba in last year's World Cup on the turn for home, but wound up third, beaten eight lengths by Curlin. "He did the same thing last year and got collared," Harty noted afterward. "But I was watching the other horses and they were struggling, so I felt pretty good." Indeed. Albertus Maximus, considered the top American hope coming in, was keen early but was not a factor while finishing well back. Same thing for race favorite Asiatic Boy, last year's runner-up. Instead, it was 60-1 Brazilian shot Gloria de Campeao who finished second, with off-the-board South African hope Paris Perfect in third. This horse really showed everyone in the world how good he is, Gryder said, then asked: Who was second? Breaking from barrier 7 in the field of 14, Well Armed went straight to the front, Gryder able to angle the 6-year-old gelding to the inside where he set a steady pace with My Indy and Albertus Maxiumus stalking. Well Armed, with his high cruising speed was in control with his ears pricked while still under a ...
