Content to trail the field in fifth as loose front-runner Stormy's Majesty set comfortable fractions of 24.76 and 48.95, Icabad Crane was put to task by Rajiv Maragh on the far turn and made an unrelenting rally to tag the pacesetter.

He this year won the top Novice Rider of the year Award after a thrilling finish. Micheal Heard, also Devon based, rode a treble on the last day of the season at Umberleigh but Micheal Nolan managed to pull one in front of him in the penultimate Race. He now hopes to turn professional.

The Bull outran the Cat and the rabbit and everybody else today when he won the 125th Travers Stakes by a neck over Concern and took his longest strides on the road to the championship of racing's 3-year-old division. It was a smashing performance by Holy Bull, who withstood a furious closing rush by Concern, the winner of the Arkansas Derby, and won for the 11th time in 13 starts. And then it was 17 lengths of daylight back to Tabasco Cat, the winner of the Preakness and Belmont and the archrival to Holy Bull for the season's honors. "He did it the hard way," said Jimmy Croll, who inherited Holy Bull one year ago and now owns and trains him. "It showed he's all heart." Then he aimed at the skeptics who had insinuated that his Bull was a speed horse miscast as a superstar, and said: "They thought he didn't have the breeding to go a mile and a quarter. They said he couldn't go around two turns. They thought he could win only on the lead. They had a rabbit up front and a closing horse chasing him at the end of a mile and a quarter. Well, he did what he had to do. He answered all the questions." He also answered the question posed this week by D. Wayne Lukas, the trainer of Tabasco Cat, who said: "Look at Holy Bull's record under a microscope. Who was second when he won the Dwyer? Nobody can tell you."
