Fly Down: Travers Workout - August 21 [01:18]
After taking to the Oklahoma Training Track at 7:30 this morning with Jose Lezcano aboard, Travers prospect Fly Down drilled four furlongs in 48.40 seconds, handily, fourth-fastest of 26 workouts at the distance. "There were a lot of horses working over there this morning, so we went over earlier," said his trainer, Nick Zito. The Hall of Famer hopes Fly Down, winner of the Grade 2 Dwyer and runner-up in the Grade 1 Belmont, will have a cleaner trip than the one he experienced in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy, in which he finished fifth. "He's a terrific, consistent horse," said Zito. "I don't think he had a good post last time. A mile and a quarter is different, but that mile and eighth last time when he had post nine Jose did a good job of getting him over. But the next thing you know, nothing worked out for him."

1999 Travers Stakes [04:33]
Lemon Drop Kid supplied a smashing encore to his victory in the Belmont Stakes today when he won the 130th running of the Travers and raced to the head of this season's class of 3-year-olds. The bay son of Kingmambo actually rewrote the climax to his June script in which he held off the long shot Vision and Verse by a head before a record Belmont crowd of 85818. This time, running against three of his Triple Crown rivals and four other colts with championship ambitions, he finished three-quarters of a length in front of Vision and Verse before a record Travers crowd of 51371. Then came the warriors: Menifee, the 9-5 favorite, got trapped on the inside and ran third in front of his stablemate, Ecton Park, while the star of the D. Wayne Lukas barn, Cat Thief, finished seventh with breathing problems. So, in million-dollar landmark races less than three months apart, Lemon Drop Kid staked his claim to the leadership of the class. It was once held by Charismatic, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before running third in the Belmont, which he finished with a fractured leg that forced his retirement. And Lemon Drop Kid's jockey, Jose Santos, was quick to assert the claim. ''He is one of the best, if not the best 3-year-old,'' Santos said. ''He won the Belmont, beat Charismatic, and now he's won the Travers. Maybe now he'll get the respect he deserves.'' Scotty Schulhofer, who trains Lemon Drop Kid for Jeanne Vance and her husband, Laddie, remembered that his horse ...
