Belmont Stakes (2012) - Union Rags Wins at the Wire [02:52]
Belmont Stakes (2012) - Union Rags Wins at the Wire The Belmont Stakes ran Saturday evening, but anticipation for the big race dwindled suddenly when on Friday it was announced that favorite to win and Triple Crown contender, I'll Have Another, scratched and subsequently retired due to a leg injury. However, the show must go on... and it did, with Union Rags taking the win for the 2012 Belmont Stakes. Union Rags prevailed in the field of 11 3-year-olds in the 144th running of the Belmont, but even so, there wasn't much excitement among fans entering the huge racetrack hours before the race. The Belmont win is worth $600000 out of a $1 million purse. "I don't have words to describe it," jockey John Velazquez said. "For (trainer Michael Matz) to finally rise up to the top again, I'm very, very happy. Union Rags passed by Painter at the finish line, giving Valazquez his second career win. Union Rags came in 7th at the Kentucky Derby and bypassed the Preakness Stakes altogether. As for I'll Have Another, he did make an appearance, however. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will instead be led to the winner's circle before the race for a retirement ceremony. "We felt that this would be a fitting ceremonial retirement for an incredible racehorse," I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill said. "There are many fans who traveled from near and far to see I'll Have Another today, and we wanted to give them a chance to help us send him off to retirement." With a Triple Crown ...

Trainer's Past Overshadows I'll Have Another's Glory [01:07]
I'll Have Another may be only one race from immortality, but his spotlight is being overshadowed by his trainer's Doug O'Neill's past. O'Neill has had numerous drug issues with his horses and is currently suspended in California. Len Berman explains why this shouldn't deter from I'll Have Another's greatness leading into the Belmont Stakes and the possible Triple Crown.

Preakness (2012) - "I'll Have Another" Wins BUT is Scratched from the Belmont.. Tendonitis [02:12]
Preakness (2012) - "I'll Have Another" Wins BUT is Scratched from the Belmont... Tendonitis... :-( I'll Have Another's chance at horse-racing immortality ended when the winner of the Preakness and Kentucky Derby was scratched from the Belmont Stakes after developing tendonitis in his left front leg. The 2012 Preakness Stakes was the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes. The race took place on May 19, 2012, and was televised in the United States on the NBC television network. The post time was 6.20 pm EDT (10:20 pm UTC). I'll Have Another won the second leg of the Triple Crown, narrowly defeating Bodemeister in a last-furlong push. A record crowd of 121309 was in attendance. I'll Have Another became the 33rd horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes double. The Preakness Stakes is an American flat Thoroughbred horse race held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a Grade I race run over a distance of 9.5 furlongs on dirt. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 lb (55 kg). It is the second leg of the US Triple Crown, with the Kentucky Derby preceding it and the Belmont Stakes following it. The horse must win all three races to win the Triple Crown. I'll Have Another (foaled April 1, 2009) is a North American Thoroughbred race horse, bred in Kentucky, owned by Canadian businessman J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O'Neill. In May 2012, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, he won the first two legs of ...

1999 Belmont Stakes - Lemon Drop Kid : Full ABC Broadcast [01:01:11]
Charismatic, standing on the threshold of sweeping the Triple Crown, missed his date with history yesterday when he ran third in the Belmont Stakes behind the 29-1 long shot Lemon Drop Kid. And, worse, in a stunning finish to the saga of the colt who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness at long odds, Charismatic fractured two bones in his left front leg as he crossed the finish line. The injury did not appear to be life-threatening but it ended his racing career. It also brought a sorrowful close to what had been a rousing day at Belmont Park, with a record crowd of 85818 on hand in perfect weather to see if Charismatic could become the first horse in 21 years to win the Triple Crown. Instead, he became the 15th horse, and the third in three years, to win the Derby and Preakness but fail to cross the finish line first in the mile-and-a-half race. Charismatic, who ran in a claiming race in February before surging to the top of the 3-year-old racing world in the past two months, will undergo surgery late this morning. Dr. Larry Bramlage, a veterinarian from Lexington, Ky., reported that the colt had cracked the cannon bone just above the ankle and had fractured the sesamoid behind it. ''It is not life-threatening,'' Bramlage said, ''but it definitely means his racing career is over. However, he should be fine as a stallion.'' Chris Antley, the jockey who overcame problems of weight and substance abuse and made a roaring comeback aboard Charismatic in the Derby and the ...

1998 Belmont Stakes - Victory Gallop : Full ABC Broadcast [01:09:42]
The Triple Crown of horse racing slipped away from Real Quiet in the final strides of the Belmont Stakes yesterday, when he was run down and beaten by a nose by Victory Gallop, the horse who chased him home in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. They staged a roaring duel down the homestretch on a brilliantly sunny and cool afternoon before 80162 fans at Belmont Park, the second-largest crowd to see the race in its 130 runnings. And they saw a Belmont Stakes of show-stopping drama, the closest in the 20 years since Affirmed nipped Alydar by a head to become the 11th horse to win the Triple Crown. No horse has completed a sweep since then. Real Quiet became the 14th to lose it in the final race in the series, and lost by the narrowest margin among those 14. Afterward, the stewards suggested that he might have been disqualified if he had won the race because he brushed Victory Gallop twice in the homestretch. For the second year in a row, the trainer Bob Baffert was foiled on the threshold of completing a Triple Crown. He was thwarted last year when Silver Charm lost the Belmont to Touch Gold by three-quarters of a length. He was foiled again this year when Real Quiet was nipped by Victory Gallop. And in one of those twists of fortune, Silver Charm's losing jockey, Gary Stevens, became the winning jockey this year on Victory Gallop. ''Being beat at the finish line, it hurts a lot,'' said Kent Desormeaux, who rode Real Quiet in the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont ...
