1999 Belmont Stakes - Lemon Drop Kid : Full ABC Broadcast [01:01:11]
Charismatic, standing on the threshold of sweeping the Triple Crown, missed his date with history yesterday when he ran third in the Belmont Stakes behind the 29-1 long shot Lemon Drop Kid. And, worse, in a stunning finish to the saga of the colt who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness at long odds, Charismatic fractured two bones in his left front leg as he crossed the finish line. The injury did not appear to be life-threatening but it ended his racing career. It also brought a sorrowful close to what had been a rousing day at Belmont Park, with a record crowd of 85818 on hand in perfect weather to see if Charismatic could become the first horse in 21 years to win the Triple Crown. Instead, he became the 15th horse, and the third in three years, to win the Derby and Preakness but fail to cross the finish line first in the mile-and-a-half race. Charismatic, who ran in a claiming race in February before surging to the top of the 3-year-old racing world in the past two months, will undergo surgery late this morning. Dr. Larry Bramlage, a veterinarian from Lexington, Ky., reported that the colt had cracked the cannon bone just above the ankle and had fractured the sesamoid behind it. ''It is not life-threatening,'' Bramlage said, ''but it definitely means his racing career is over. However, he should be fine as a stallion.'' Chris Antley, the jockey who overcame problems of weight and substance abuse and made a roaring comeback aboard Charismatic in the Derby and the ...

Kentucky Derby (2012) - "I'll Have Another" Wins in an Upset - Preakness is Next... [02:19]
(2012) Kentucky Derby - "I'll Have Another" Wins -- Preakness is Next The 138th Kentucky Derby was the running of the Kentucky Derby in 2012, and took place on May 5 at 6.24 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) at Churchill Downs. Due to sponsorship, the race was known as the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. The race was televised in the United States on the NBC television network. Prior to the race, the field was considered "unusually strong"; four time Derby winning trainer D. Wayne Lukas called it the "best bunch I've seen in a long time". The race was won by I'll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, with a time of 2.01.83, while favorite Bodemeister finished second and Dullahan was third. A record crowd of 165307 was on hand at the track for the race. I'll Have Another (foaled April 1, 2009) is a North American Thoroughbred race horse, bred in Kentucky, owned by Canadian businessman J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O'Neill. In May 2012, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, he won the first two legs of the Triple Crown by taking the Kentucky Derby with a time of 2.1.83. and the Preakness Stakes in 1.55.94. 2012: three-year-old season... I'll Have Another began his three-year-old season by winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on February 4, as a 43/1 outsider. In April he won the Santa Anita Derby, staying on gamely to beat the favorite Creative Cause by a nose. I'll Have Another's lead pony in the Kentucky Derby post parade on May 5, 2012 was the retired ...

2003 Belmont Stakes - Empire Maker + Post Race [17:38]
History was set at Belmont Park Saturday but it was not Funny Cide becoming a Triple Crown winner. Instead, it was trainer Bobby Frankel winning his first Triple Crown race when his Empire Maker won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Ten Most Wanted was second and Funny Cide third. The New Yorkers were rooting for New York-bred Funny Cide. But a New York-bred did win the Belmont -- Frankel was born in Brooklyn. Empire Maker ran second to Funny Cide in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and then skipped the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), which Funny Cide won easily. Empire Maker was favored in the Derby. Empire Maker is by Unbridled and out of the incredible producer Toussaud, by El Gran Senor. The Belmont winner was bred and is owned by Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farm. Jose Santos sent Funny Cide right to the lead in the 1 ½ mile race run over a track made quite sloppy by persistent rains. He appeared in good shape when the half was run in :48.70, and six furlongs were timed in 1:13.51. But, Jerry Bailey aboard Empire Maker said he could sense that Funny Cide was rank as they traveled down the backside. Empire Maker was in third at that point behind Funny Cide and Scrimshaw. "He was so rank today. He couldn't get him to settle down," Bailey said of Santos and Funny Cide. Bailey commenced his move on the turn for home and went by Funny Cide fairly easily. Pat Day had Ten Most Wanted in full gear at that point and they made a race out of it, closing to within three-quarters of a length at ...

1986 Kentucky Derby - Ferdinand [21:48]
A horse from California was supposed to win the 112th Kentucky Derby, but hardly anybody expected it to be Ferdinand, a 17‚1 shot ridden by a 54-year-old jockey and saddled by a 73-year-old trainer. But at the finish of a slow and roughly run Derby, it was Ferdinand, ridden by Bill Shoemaker and trained by Charlie Whittingham, drawing away to a 21/4- length victory over Bold Arrangement and Broad Brush, with the favored Californians, Snow Chief and Badger Land, off the board. Shoemaker steered Ferdinand, a son of the English triple crown winner Nijinsky II, through heavy traffic from last place to first while covering the mile and a quarter in a dull 2:024/5. Bold Arrangement, an English colt, won a three-way duel for second place, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of Broad Brush. Snow Chief, the 2‚1 favorite, tired badly to finish 11th after taking a brief lead round the far turn. Ferdinand paid $37.40 for $2 to win, the highest Derby payoff since Gato del Sol, also a Californian, also rallied to win from last place and returned $41.40 in 1982. The race was a sentimental triumph for Shoemaker, who became by far the oldest rider ever to win the race while scoring his fourth Derby triumph, and for Whittingham, a Hall of Fame trainer who had never won a Derby. Artistically, though, it was a less successful Derby run before a crowd of 123891. The winner's time over a fast track was the slowest in 12 years, and more horses had rough trips than honest ones today ...
