1999 Ramona Handicap [03:22]
The only Del Mar record that might approach the one trainer Bob Baffert set Saturday is jockey Bill Shoemaker's 94-win season in 1954. Among trainers, Baffert's feat stands alone. They ran five Grade I races here this summer, and Baffert won them all, concluding with Tuzla's survival in a four-horse scramble to the wire in the $400000 Ramona Handicap. To win all the Grade I's Del Mar had to offer, Baffert's stable needed a cross-section of good horses. Preceding Tuzla, a 5-year-old grass mare, were Joe Who in the Eddie Read Handicap, Tout Charmant in the Del Mar Oaks, General Challenge in the Pacific Classic and Chilukki in the Vinery Del Mar Debutante. Chilukki was the only favorite in the quintet. Tuzla, who had been favored in seven of her last eight starts, went off at 4-1 in the Ramona, having been beaten here three weeks ago and suspect at the 1 1/8-mile distance. "She's got so much heart," Baffert said. "When you have a win machine, it makes my job a lot easier. Dana Barnes, who gets on her in the mornings, got her to relax and told me the mile and an eighth would be no problem." At the wire, Tuzla was a head better than Happyanunoit, who was a head in front of Spanish Fern. Que Belle, who finished fourth, was only another neck back. Tranquility Lake, the even-money favorite, finished fifth after leading in mid-stretch. Bobby Frankel, a three-time winner of the Ramona, trains Happyanunoit and Spanish Fern, and Julio Canani, who trains Tranquility Lake, used to ...

RACHEL ALEXANDRA - 2009 Preakness Stakes [03:22]
Calvin Borel made the right choice and history was made May 16 at Pimlico, when for the first time, the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner not only ran in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) but won the race in convincing fashion. Rachel Alexandra won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown by a length over Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Mine That Bird. The week following her win in the Oaks, Rachel Alexandra was purchased by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick and transferred from trainer Hal Wiggins to Steve Asmussen. Borel, who had ridden both Rachel Alexandra in the Oaks and Mine That Bird in the Derby, was asked to continue riding the filly and he agreed. Mine That Birds trainer, Chip Woolley, picked up Mike Smith on the Derby winner. It made for one of the most intriguing Preakness Stakes ever, and after drawing post 13, Borel knew he would have to send the filly from the outset, which he did. Big Drama, under John Velazquez, who had the rail, was an obvious pacesetter and he went with the filly as the field went down the stretch the first time and through the first turn. They went the opening quarter in :23.13 and the half in :46.71. Borel was able to open up just a bit on the backstretch but he had used the daughter of Medaglia dOro a great deal to get the lead and knew he had to try and slow the pace a bit. "I was comfortable early, but down the backside they started to pick it up," Borel said. Big Drama, who had skipped the Derby, was still in second down ...

1991 Haskell Invitational [02:41]
Unraced for seven weeks following his Belmont Stakes victory, Hansel ran as if he were an out-of-shape athlete in the Monmouth Park stretch today. The sleek-looking bay finished more than 13 lengths back, in third place, in the $500000 Haskell Invitational Handicap, which was captured by Lost Mountain. Corporate Report was second by a head. The crowd, impressed with Hansel's seven-length victory in the Preakness, which he followed with a gritty head decision over Strike the Gold in the Belmont, poured more than $104000 onto his nose. Hansel went off as the 1-2 favorite. Although placed close to the front-running Corporate Report, he faded in the stretch. "Hansel ran a good race but, you know, he was away seven weeks and they didn't have him at his best," suggested the winning jockey, Craig Perret. Jerry Bailey, aboard Hansel, found he had a luxury horse who had suddenly lost the greatness he displayed at Belmont on June 8. "When Corporate Report moved, I asked Hansel for more, but he was just empty," said Bailey. There may have been another factor in addition to Hansel's layoff. Hansel couldn't get to the front even though he broke from the rail. Instead, Corporate Report quickly took command, while Private Man raced on the outside, boxing in Hansel. "He's a funny horse," Perret said of Hansel. "He's comfortable when free, but confused when boxed in." The track was labeled "good" after being "muddy" for the early races. The first five races were captured by front-runners ...
