JP's Gusto, who we wrote about as one of our top 2-year olds to watch (prior to Kantharos being retired), will take a 3-race win streak into this Wednesday's $250000 Del Mar Futurity. The Del Mar Futurity, featuring JP's Gusto, will headline the closing day at Del Mar. An exceptional horse racing meet, with great track architecture, and coastal view of the Pacific, and nestled snuggly in the small suburb of San Diego, Del Mar is one of our favorite meets of the year. JP's Gusto will face off again against his rival Western Mood, this time stretching out to 7-furlongs. Many are skeptical about that distance, and although it's no where near the typical two turn classic that most strive for, it could still be the outer bounds of his pedigree distance.

1989 ケンタッキーダービー(G1) サンデーサイレンス イージーゴア2着 [02:20]
ウィッティンガムはサンデーサイレンスのケンタッキーダービー出走について、「サンタアニタダービーが終わるまでは分からない」とも述べていたが、4月8日にサンタアニタダービーを11馬身差というレース史上最大の着差で優勝したことを受けてケンタッキーダービー出走を正式に表明。4月半ばにはケンタッキーダービーに備え同レースが行われるチャーチルダウンズ競馬場へサンデーサイレンスを移送した。ケンタッキーダービーはレース前日に20mmを超える雨が降り、1967年以来といわれる悪い馬場状態で行われた。また、発走時の気温は摂氏6.1℃でレース史上最低であった。サンデーサイレンスはスタートで体勢を崩し他馬と激しく接触し、直線で左右によれる素振りを見せる場面も見られた（ヴァレンズエラは馬場の両側から歓声を浴びせられて驚いたからだと、ウィッティンガムは馬場の内側のラチ沿いに並んで警備員に驚いたからだとしている）が、1番人気のイージーゴアに1馬身半の着差をつけ優勝。レース後、ウィッティンガムは「この馬は三冠馬になる」と宣言した。
