After flying 3000 miles to do it, Bertrando injected some California intrigue into the contest for Horse of the Year yesterday when he led all the way to win the $500000 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park by a resounding 13 1/2 lengths over the hometown hero, Devil His Due. It was four weeks after Bertrando had won the Pacific Classic and come into his own as perhaps the most formidable speedhorse on the West Coast, and maybe in the country. And he did nothing to diminish his stature yesterday as Gary Stevens rode him to the victory that marked him as one of the leading candidates for year-end honors and championships. Devil His Due, the winner of four stakes this year, did win something of value yesterday. He won the "race within the race," the contest for first place in the American Championship Racing Series, which ended with the Woodward. With points accumulated from his earlier races, he beat out Bertrando for the top bonus of $550000, while Bertrando got second prize of $225000. Valley Crossing ran third in the Woodward and third in the series for a bonus of $125000. But during the last two months, Bertrando has soared. He crossed the country in July and ran third behind Valley Crossing and Devil His Due in the Iselin Handicap at Monmouth Park in New Jersey. Saratoga All Access: Fabulous Fillies Day at Saratoga Race Course to benefit BCRF [03:50]
NYRA celebrated women and their contributions to the thoroughbred industry while raising funds to support BCRF at Fabulous Fillies Day at Saratoga Race Course. All fans who wore pink received free admission. The centerpiece of the day-long affair was the Sizzling Hot Pink Saratoga Hat Luncheon to benefit BCRF in the At the Rail Pavilion. This year's luncheon was in memory of BCRF Founder and Chairman Evelyn H. Lauder and honored thoroughbred owner and breeder Virginia Kraft Payson. The event was emceed by Jeannine Edwards from ESPN. The day featured a number of special events and activities designed to honor women of the thoroughbred industry while raising funds to support BCRF. The day's card featured an all-filly racing program in concert with the day's theme. Pink bunting, ribbons and flowers adorned the track, including a pink flower blanket on the horse statue in the Paddock. The first 1000 women (ages 16 and older) through the admission gates received a cubic zirconia and were directed to bring their stones to one of two representatives from Northeastern Fine Jewelry on track to determine if they were the recipient of a genuine diamond. Kathy Hulbert of Oak Hill, NY received a genuine diamond that qualified her to select from one of three Hearts on Fire diamond pendants valued at up to $7000, courtesy of Northeastern Fine Jewelry, during a special winner's circle presentation.
