1978 Travers Stakes - Affirmed -vs- Alydar [05:41]
With the infield open to the public, a record crowd of 50122 jammed its way into the Spa, shattering the previous record by more than 15000. There was no way anyone in attendance or the millions watching on TV could foresee the bizarre events that would ensue. What began as a glorious celebration of the sport would end in bitterness and controversy. For the first three-quarters of a mile, everything was going as predicted. Affirmed, favored at 3-5, was sitting comfortably in second and about to dispose of the pace-setting Shake Shake Shake, who had been setting leisurely fractions of :24 and :48. Alydar, sent off at even-money, was in third, two lengths behind Affirmed. Everyone was waiting anxiously for something to happen. When would Affirmed blow past Shake Shake Shake? How and when was Velasquez going to attack Affirmed, and how was he going to try to avoid looking into the eye of the tiger this time? The answer soon became obvious. Cordero took Shake Shake Shake off the rail and began drifting out into Affirmed, opening a huge hole for Alydar, who had been running just inside of Nasty of Bold. Velasquez, as if expecting that hole to open, wasted no time and shot Alydar right through along the vacated rail. Affirmed by now had taken over the lead from the tiring Shake Shake Shake, only to have Alydar come charging through on his inside going into the far turn. The crowd let out a resounding cheer and braced for the battle they had been waiting for. Pincay, sensing the ...

Jersey Town - The Cigar Mile (G1) [01:54]
Jersey Town, the longest shot in the field at 34-1, dueled with Haynesfield through the final 200 yards before prevailing by a head to win a rousing edition of the Grade 1, $250000 Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile on Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack. Trained by Barclay Tagg for owner Charles Fipke, who teamed to win the 2008 edition of the race with Tale of Ekati, Jersey Town ran third through the early going as pacesetter Vineyard Haven was prompted through fractions of 22.69 and 45.27 by Haynesfield. Moving up to challenge for the lead on the turn, Jersey Town bore down on Haynesfield in upper stretch and the two battled back-and-forth to the wire, with Jersey Town sticking his head in front at the last second for the victory. His time for the mile was 1:34.43. "Today, he wanted to win," said jockey Cornelio Velasquez, aboard the 4-year-old son of Speightstown. "The other horse, he ran a big one too. My horse is a very good horse." Girolamo closed from mid-pack to finish third, 1 ¾ lengths clear of favored Bribon, who in turn was followed by Friend Or Foe, Soaring Empire, Vineyard Haven, Musket Man, and Half Metal Jacket. "I thought he ran well and tried hard; he just came up a little flat the last sixteenth of a mile," said Todd Pletcher, trainer of the beaten favorite. The Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile, the final Grade 1 race of the year in New York, was the first stakes victory of any kind of Jersey Town, who was bred in Kentucky by his owner. Unraced at two, Jersey Town ...

2010 Manhattan (G1) - Winchester [04:07]
Trainer Christophe Clement won the 109th running of the Grade 1, $400000 Woodford Reserve Manhattan, just not with the horse everyone expected. As favored Gio Ponti, the defending champion, steadied sharply in traffic on the far turn, long shot Winchester swung six wide with a quarter-mile to run for jockey Cornelio Velasquez and blew past a wall of four horses in deep stretch to win by a half-length. Once Gio Ponti's rider, Ramon Dominguez, found room, the dual Eclipse Award-winning turf champion surged into contention with a furlong to go, briefly gaining the lead before his stablemate went by. The winner, a 5-year-old son of Theatrical bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone, picked up the second Grade 1 victory of his career, completing the 1¼-mile fixture in 1:59.46 on an inner turf course labeled firm. At odds of 21.40-to-1, Winchester paid $44.80 for a $2 win ticket and keyed an all-Clement exacta that paid $147.
