New York Watch: Flashpoint [01:28]
While Flashpoint may not always be the best behaved colt, he certainly has speed, which he demonstrated today with a sharp debut victory at Aqueduct Racetrack. He becomes the first horse in 2011 to join the New York Watch list, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course. Away alertly from post position one, Flashpoint cleared on the lead and was tracked by odds-on favorite Simba's Story through fractions of 22.89 and 45.98. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez shook the reins at Flashpoint as they turned for home, and the colt answered by drawing away to a 6 ¼-length score, completing the six furlongs on the inner track in 1:09.68. "He's a big, strapping colt and is as strong as a bull," said John Fort, president of Peachtree Stable, the operation that owns Flashpoint. "He's not a hyper horse. He won't flip on top of you, but he will run right over you." Fort bought Flashpoint, a 3-year-old son of two-time Grade 1-winning sprinter Pomeroy, for $100000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. "He was probably the last thing I was looking for because I usually don't buy sprinters," said Fort. "He was kind of a big bully as a yearling, but you could tell that he was going to grow into that frame. I decided to take a shot on a horse that was different than the type I usually buy, which is usually more of a classic-type horse." Even though Fort saw the colt misbehave before he entered into the sales ...

New York Watch: Parting Words [02:17]
Parting Words had something to say Sunday on the Aqueduct turf, coming from off the pace to break her maiden and join the New York Watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course. Making her second start, Parting Words veered outward at the break, bumping a rival to her right. She settled into a clear spot in eighth and was kept outside by jockey Ramon Dominguez along the backstretch run, split horses while making smooth headway with two furlongs left, and grabbed the lead from runner-up Celestial Kitten at the sixteenth pole to prevail by a length. "She broke crooked and banged around with a couple of horses and they usually they don't overcome something that severe, but she overcame all that and showed a lot of class," said winning trainer Barclay Tagg. Parting Words, the 7-2 third choice, ran the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:45.49, completing the final furlong in 5.88 seconds. In her lone previous effort, a turf event at Saratoga on August 27 that has produced two other next-out winners, Parting Words finished fourth after racing three wide on both turns. "She broke a little slow and got hung wide the entire way, and it was hard to judge her off that," said Tagg. "But apparently her number was pretty good, so we had hopes for her. We had a couple of small setbacks with her and we couldn't get her back into a race. It's been a long stretch between starts, but she proved our feelings today ...

New York Watch: Buffum [02:04]
The progeny of Bernardini created a lot of buzz in the sales ring as yearlings, with three selling for over $1 million. One member of that trio, Buffum, has joined the New York Watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga, after winning his debut today at Belmont. Buffum -- purchased for $1.2 million at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling sale by Darley Stable, which bred and campaigned Bernardini, the 2006 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt -- went off at 8-1 and raced three lengths off the lead in fourth as Rock Hard Nicky set solid fractions of 22.40 and 45.54. After taking over with three-eighths left, Buffum was set down by David Cohen in upper stretch, drifted out under left-handed urging inside the final furlong, and was all out to hold off Cool Blue Red Hot by a nose. Buffum, who completed the one-mile distance in 1:36.85, was 7 ¼ lengths clear of longshot third-place finisher Acadian Blues. "We had high expectations for him before the race with him being by a champion horse," said trainer Tom Albertrani, who also conditioned the colt's sire. "His works were always promising, and we were expecting to see him run as well as he did today." Despite the small margin of victory, Albertrani believes Buffum has a promising future. "It looked like the horse was traveling very smoothly and easily down the backside," said Albertrani. "He took the lead quite easily and managed to hold off a late charge ...

New York Watch: Fort Hughes [01:19]
It had been nearly 13 months since trainer Kiaran McLaughlin had sent out a debut winner on the dirt, but Fort Hughes' impressive score on Sunday at Belmont Park made it worth the wait. With the victory, Fort Hughes joins the New York watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga. His page is located at. Fort Hughes, a Darley Stable homebred, quickly seized the lead from post 1 and was pressed by Rift through fractions of 22.34 and 45.24. Jockey Alex Solis flashed the whip at Fort Hughes in the stretch, and that's all the encouragement the 7-1 shot needed to pull away to a 5 ½-length victory. The final time for 5 ½ furlongs was 1:02.98, 0.72 seconds off the track record set by Mike's Classic, a 5-year-old, in 2004. While Darley had high expectations for Fort Hughes from the beginning, McLaughlin admitted he didn't expect such a strong performance from the chestnut colt. "He didn't show brilliant speed in the morning and we didn't love him because he hadn't worked lights out," said McLaughlin. "We train a lot of them on the Greentree Polytrack and it can be hard to get a reading on them first time out. We are happy and surprised that he ran so well. I mean, that was a serious race! I don't know what we do from here, but we are happy he won so impressively." Fort Hughes becomes the 11th winner for his freshman sire Henny Hughes, whom McLaughlin trained for Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al Maktoum's ...
