New York Watch: Ruthenia [02:01]
Ruthenia has a high bar to clear if she wants to duplicate the success achieved by her full-sister, but an impressive debut at Belmont Park is a pretty good start. Despite her pedigree, the daughter of Pulpit was dismissed at 20-1 on Monday in a one-mile event on Belmont's Widener turf course, and the full-sister to the 2005 Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks winner Rutherienne made her doubters pay by drawing off under Alan Garcia's hand encouragement to win by 3 ½ lengths. Ruthenia, who covered the distance in 1:37.40 and ran the final quarter mile in a snappy 23.34 seconds, becomes the latest horse to join the New York Watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga. "There was no reason for her to have been a long price," trainer Christophe Clement said of Ruthenia, who races for her breeder, Virginia Kraft Payson. "Good for the guys who picked her! She had trained well and had shown a good turn of foot in the morning. Even though she is smaller, she moved well." Clement and Payson were also the team behind Rutherienne, who won 10 stakes in her career, including the Sugar Plum Time, Grade 3 Sands Point, Grade 3 Lake George, and Grade 3 Noble Damsel Handicap in New York. Off the board just four times in 20 starts, Rutherienne earned nearly $1.3 million. "Rutherienne was also small," said Clement when asked to compare Ruthenia to her older sister. "She was sometimes difficult to train, as some of the Pulpits are ...

New York Watch: Uncle Mo [01:38]
Uncle Mo (5th, $3.80), bet long and strong throughout, showed what the buzz was all about with an eye-catching debut by 14 1/4 lengths. The 14th 2-year-old winner at the meet for Todd Pletcher, Uncle Mo ran six furlongs in 1:09.21 under John Velazquez. Admiral Perry, at 51-1 the longest shot shot on the board, finished second.

New York Watch: JB's Thunder [02:15]
JB's Thunder made some noise at Saratoga Race Course when he scored by 1 ¾-lengths in his debut, a 1 1/16th-mile event over the Mellon Turf Course on Saturday. With the victory JB Thunder joins the New York Watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga. Unchallenged for the early lead, JB's Thunder was kept under a snug hold by Shaun Bridgmohan as he carved out fractions and 49.93 and 1:14.31 while receiving mild pressure from Bonaroo. After Bridgomohan shook the reins at the top of the stretch, JB's Thunder opened to a three length advantage and was never threatened as Santiva reduced the final margin to 1 ¾ lengths. "He's a sharp horse -- he's good in the gate and is very intelligent," said winning trainer Al Stall, Jr. "He had done everything right to this point, and I thought he'd lay close. I told Shaun, 'Take what they give you on the front end. He took the lead comfortably because a couple of horses took back. But if someone had gone to the lead, he would have been able to rate off of them. On the first turn I felt very good. His ears were flicking back and forth on the backside, and he was able to kick." JB's Thunder trained on dirt at Churchill Downs and at Saratoga earlier in the summer before Stall elected to try the son of Thunder Gulch on the Oklahoma Turf Course on August 11. After working four furlongs around dogs in 48.90, handily, Stall decided to keep the bay colt on the grass. "As ...
