New York Watch: Gallant Fields [01:54]
With talented 3-year-olds Ice Box, Fly Down, Jackson Bend, Miner's Reserve, and Our Dark Knight in his barn, Nick Zito is poised to make some noise in the second half of 2010. And following today's fourth race at Belmont Park, you can add Gallant Fields to the list of sharp Zito sophomores. Making the second start of his career on a muggy day at Belmont Park, Gallant Fields pressed the pace in the two path through a half in a testing 45.37, then ran away from his rivals under a drive in the stretch to win by a widening 8¼ lengths with Jose Lezcano aboard. "I was very, very happy with [Gallant Fields' performance]," said Zito, who trains the son of Smarty Jones on behalf of Paul Braverman and Suffolk Downs' majority owner Richard Fields. "We take our time with them, and sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn't. He's a big horse, and from time to time he had what we call 'interruptions.'"

New York Watch: Flawless [01:46]
Flawless lived up to the lofty expectations implied by her name, drawing off to 13 ¼-length debut triumph at Belmont Park to become the 12th horse featured in the New York Watch series, which shines the spotlight on promising colts and fillies that have recently cleared the maiden and allowance ranks at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. The Peter Blum homebred was no secret in todays second race, going off as the 11-10 favorite. With Kent Desormeaux in the irons, she broke on top and led through a half of 46.57. Two opponents lined up to her outside nearing the quarter pole, but the crowds selection turned away those challengers and needed only mild urging in the stretch to spurt clear to a dominant victory over runner-up Click Your Heels, a full-sister to the 2004 Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner Tapit. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott believes the best is yet to come from Flawless, who covered seven furlongs in 1:23.71 over a main track that had been playing on the slow side. She wasnt cranked. She was only half ready, Mott said with a grin. Shes worked very well and has a lot of ability. Mott said Flawless will go through her allowance conditions before she competes in a stakes race. With as well as she ran on the dirt today, well leave her there for now, added Mott. It looked like another furlong wouldnt hurt her.

New York Watch: Hunters Bay [01:59]
Ghostzapper and Smokn Frolic won major races in New York during their racing careers, and their son 3-year-old son now has the opportunity to create his own legacy. Named Hunters Bay, the regally-bred colt became the 11th horse featured in the New York Watch series, which shines the spotlight on promising colts and fillies that have recently cleared the maiden and allowance ranks at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Fifth in his debut after breaking slowly at Gulfstream Park on April 10, Hunters Bay was ready to roll today at Belmont Park in his second start. Away alertly this time, he set fractions of :23.14 and :45.57 while receiving pace pressure from Loquacious, began to open on the field at the top of the stretch, and drew clear under a brisk hand ride to score by 8 ½ lengths. We thought stretching him out would be the key and hoped hed break a little better, said Hunters Bays trainer Todd Pletcher, who conditioned Smokn Frolic during her racing days. He was definitely more professional second time out. He comes from a pedigree that makes it look like hell improve going longer. This is a big step forward, and hopefully he continues to improve. He could have a future. Hunters Bay, the 9-2 fifth choice in the field of six, covered the 1 1/16th-mile distance in a snappy 1:41.08. While Pletcher noted how he thought the track was playing on the quick side, winning Jockey John Velazquez was awed nonetheless. They were cooking out there, said ...

New York Watch: Cocalero [02:39]
A sluggish start couldnt stop Cocalero from breaking his maiden on debut and becoming the 10th horse featured in the New York Watch series, which shines the spotlight on promising colts and fillies that have recently cleared the maiden and allowance ranks at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. By AP Indy and out of Grade 1 winner Got Koko, Cocalero, a $175000 yearling, topped the 2009 OBS Spring Sale as a juvenile when he was purchased for $675000 by John Ferguson, agent for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who raced the colt at Belmont Park under the colors of Darley Stable. Despite being coupled in the wagering along with fellow first-time starter Stratford Hill, another well-bred son of AP Indy, Cocalero received only mild betting support at 5-1. Cocalero, after loading reluctantly, reared in the starting gate. He stood still for the break, but was away several lengths slowly. It was unexpected, trainer Tom Albertrani said of Cocaleros gate problems. First time out, you never know what to expect or how they are going to act. He was really tense in the gate. Jockey Alan Garcia didnt panic, however, and let the Cocalero bide his time at the back of the pack. The bay raced with his head held high through the far turn, but got down to business once he was swung out at the top of the stretch, splitting rivals and closing strongly to win by 1 ¾ lengths. [Garcia] was really patient, and the horse was able to recover for him, said Albertrani. He ...

New York Watch: Biloxi [01:40]
If not for a chance telephone call, owner John Fort of Peachtree Stable might have never purchased Biloxi, who overcame greenness to break his maiden on April 24 at Aqueduct Racetrack and become the eighth horse featured in the recently introduced New York Watch series. Prior to the 2008 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Fort made a trip to Taylor Made Farm to visually inspect horses in the farms consignment. After scouting 30 yearlings, Fort left the farm, only to remember he had never looked at a particular Tiznow colt. I called Duncan Taylor (at Taylor Made) and said, I didnt see the Tiznow, Fort said of the colt later named Biloxi, who was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm. So I went back the next day and saw him. Fort wasnt overwhelmed by the yearlings catalogue page, but was impressed enough by the dark bays appearance to buy him for $350000. There is a lot of white on his page, said Fort, speaking by telephone from Ocala, Fla. You have to go back to the third dam to see any black-type. But this is a colt who is the picture of a thoroughbred. Hes a big, strapping, beautiful horse.
