2010 True North (G2) - Bribon [02:36]
The veteran gelding Bribon returned to the scene of his greatest triumph Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park, charging from last to first for a 1½-length victory over Snapshot in the 32nd running of the Grade 2, $250000 True North Handicap. The 7-year-old son of Mark of Esteem, who last year won Belmont Park's prestigious Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, stayed well behind Checklist's opening fractions of 22.49 and 45.60, then barreled widest of all as they straightened for home, taking command with 100 yards to go and completing six furlongs in 1:09.63 over the fast track. "There were quite a few horses with speed and I just needed to find a place for him to settle into a simple rhythm, and then quicken when I asked him," said winning rider Garrett Gomez of Bribon, who is owned by Derrick Smith and trained by Todd Pletcher. "He picked them up with ease and came home with ease -- just the way you'd like." Favored Checklist, also trained by Pletcher, held for third, 4¼ lengths back, and was followed by Formidable, Elusive Warning, More Than a Reason, Fantasy Free, and Gato Go Win.

2010 Manhattan (G1) - Winchester [04:07]
Trainer Christophe Clement won the 109th running of the Grade 1, $400000 Woodford Reserve Manhattan, just not with the horse everyone expected. As favored Gio Ponti, the defending champion, steadied sharply in traffic on the far turn, long shot Winchester swung six wide with a quarter-mile to run for jockey Cornelio Velasquez and blew past a wall of four horses in deep stretch to win by a half-length. Once Gio Ponti's rider, Ramon Dominguez, found room, the dual Eclipse Award-winning turf champion surged into contention with a furlong to go, briefly gaining the lead before his stablemate went by. The winner, a 5-year-old son of Theatrical bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone, picked up the second Grade 1 victory of his career, completing the 1¼-mile fixture in 1:59.46 on an inner turf course labeled firm. At odds of 21.40-to-1, Winchester paid $44.80 for a $2 win ticket and keyed an all-Clement exacta that paid $147.

1999 Haskell Invitational Grade I [04:49]
It was a three-wide move on the last turn, made with parabolic precision, that not only dusted Cat Thief and Forestry, but perhaps also kicked dirt on any sentiments that Charismatic had won the crown as the best 3-year-old in the nation. The horse responsible was Menifee. His hardly surprised rider was Pat Day, in the $1 million Grade I Haskell Invitational today at Monmouth Park. What does it mean? That three at-the-wire finishes can be deceptive. That anyone who penciled in Charismatic, the courageous Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, as the best of his generation needs an eraser. That Menifee's trainer, Elliott Walden, concluded a day that those with professional horse fantasies dream about. Less than an hour before Menifee ran down a pair of West Coast speedsters here, Walden's Ecton Park romped in the mud and ran away from a Grade II Jim Dandy field at Saratoga Springs. ''I knew he had won at the eighth pole,'' Walden said of Menifee's fifth career victory, his third this year, to move the colt's earnings past $1.5 million. The 33056 people who braved gloomy skies and early-morning showers may not have been so sure. The Derby and Preakness runner-up, Menifee still trailed a game Cat Thief, who was neck to neck with a determined Forestry in the stretch. ''I felt very good all the way, to be honest with you,'' said Day, who won his first Haskell and ran Menifee's record over the second-place Cat Thief to 5-0. ''I think if we run three more times, Menifee would beat ...

2010 Wood Memorial (G1) - Eskendereya [02:00]
Taking command at the top of the stretch, heavily favored Eskedereya blew away five rivals to take the 86th running of the Grade 1, $750000 Wood Memorial on Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack by an authoritative 9¾ lengths over Jackson Bend. The margin of victory was even greater than his 8½-length win over Jackson Bend in his previous start in the Fountain of Youth on February 20 and reaffirmed Eskendereyas status as a leading contender for the May 1 Kentucky Derby. In the 85 previous runnings of the Wood, 24 winners have gone on to claim the favorites role in the Run for the Roses; 11 have won. Ridden by John Velazquez, the 3-year-old chestnut son of Giants Causeway settled in third behind fractions of 24.32, 49.21 and 1:13.54 set by longshot Most Happy Fella, then ranged up three wide on the far turn to take over straightening for home. With Velazquez glancing back over his shoulder, Eskendereya continued to widen the margin between himself and the rest of the field, hitting the wire in 1:49.97 for the 1 1/8th miles. There was more there than what we saw, even as impressive as it was, said Todd Pletcher, who trains Eskendereya for Zayat Stables. The thing that Johnny did today was take pretty good care of him from the eighth pole to the wire.
