Banshee Breeze won the Alabama Stakes by six lengths over Lu Ravi, one month after winning the Coaching Club American Oaks, and inflicted defeat for the first time on Manis tique, the wonder horse from California. Both Banshee Breeze and Manistique are daughters of Unbridled, winner of the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic. But Banshee Breeze, racing for the ninth time, won for the fifth time and showed that experience often prevails over sheer brilliance. Manistique, a huge filly named for a town in Wisconsin, was racing for only the fourth time. And, although she had won each of her three starts at Hollywood Park by at least 10 lengths, she apparently had breathing problems and could not cope. Banshee Breeze has won at a mile and a half in the Coaching Club American Oaks and at a mile and a quarter in the Alabama, the filly counterpart to next Saturday's Travers Stakes. Even her jockey, Jerry Bailey, was impressed with the way she handled Manistique, the betting choice, ridden by Gary Stevens, who flew here from the West Coast for the race. ''I had a lot of horse at every point in the race,'' Bailey said, ''and I couldn't believe how she was running. I was right behind the favorite, and I wasn't sure how much horse Gary had, but I knew that he would need a lot because my filly was ready to run.
