Barbaro Trainer Michael Matz Bringing Union Rags to Kentucky Derby Bleacher Report.wmv [06:41]
It's 5:30 in the morning at the beautiful Palm Meadows training facility in Florida and upon our arrival, we find world-renowned horse trainer Michael Matz is already hard at work. We caught up with Matz a day before the Florida Derby where his front-runner, Union Rags, would run in an important preliminary to racings' Triple Crown. This is not unfamiliar territory for Matz. He was, of course, the trainer of Barbaro. "Why We Watch" spends time with Matz at his training facility just a day before the Florida Derby. Although Union Rags would lose, he came on notably faster than the two front-runners. The extra 1/8 of a mile should prove to make the difference that Union Rags needs to win the Kentucky Derby. Bregawn- The 1983 Cheltenham Gold Cup [01:18]
A historic Cheltenham Gold Cup took place in 1983 when Bregawn won the coveted race. March 17, 1983 marks one of the most extraordinary training achievement in the history of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The first five horses home, led by Bregawn, followed by Captain John, Wayward Lad, Silver Buck and Ashley House all travelled to Cheltenham from the same stable at Dunkeswick in Yorkshire where they were trained by Michael Dickinson, in only his third season as a trainer. The jockey who steered Bregawn to victory on the day was Graham Bradley and the horse was owned by James Kennelly.
