New York Watch - The Lumber Guy [01:37]
The Lumber Guy was more than OK on January 28 at Aqueduct Racetrack as he skipped and jumped clear to a 9 ¼-length debut victory against eight maiden New York-bred 3-year-olds. Leaving from post position 2, The Lumber Guy wasted no time getting to the front, leading by 1 ½ lengths two furlongs into the race with an opening fraction of 22.79 seconds and widening his advantage to two lengths through a half in 46.12. He was never shown the whip in the lane by jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr. as he pulled clear from Smarty Julips, who chased the winner in second from start to finish. The Lumber Guy, a gray colt by Grand Slam, received a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 for having completed six furlongs in 1:10.20. The performance was similar to the 6 ½-length maiden win Bold Deed, a half-brother to The Lumber Guy, posted in a six-furlong dash at Aqueduct last March in his second start. In three starts since earning his diploma, Bold Deed won the one-mile Packett's Landing overnight stakes for New York-breds in April, finished fifth in the Grade 2 Peter Pan, and second in the NYSS Spectacular Bid. Like Bold Deed, The Lumber Guy is a homebred trained by Michael Hushion for owner Barry Schwartz.

The Gravesend, Brooklyn Handicap 1904 [07:21]
The Brooklyn Handicap in Gravesend, Coney Island, Brooklyn, May 26, 1904 American Biograph & Mutoscope Co. Camera: GW "Billy" Bitzer Coney Island's Gravesend Race Track opened in 1887 and remained in operation until 1910. The first 'Handicap' was a 1 1/4 miles left-handed race on dirt and became part of the 'Handicap Triple' which today is preceded by the Metropolitan Handicap and followed by the Suburban Handicap. The Brooklyn Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in early June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, on Long Island. It currently is a Grade II event open to three-year-olds and up willing to race one and one-half miles on dirt. The first segment of this film begins with the horses and their entourages entering the track and getting organized. The handicap seen here begins at 4:00 viewed in five edits, each view is from a stationary camera with virtually no panning. The racing segment itself lasts two minutes with the last minute of film focused on The Picket in what I presume is the winners circle. The Picket was ridden by Jockey Oscar Helgesen who took the prize in 2:06.60. The Picket was trained by Carroll B. Reid and owned by Waldeck Stable. Four horses have won the Handicap Triple: Whisk Broom II (1913), Tom Fool (1953), Kelso (1961), Fit to Fight (1984). 01/05/12 - 3
