"Wow! What A Filly!" - Mossflower - 1998 Hempstead Handicap [04:01]
Her name is Mossflower, she is a 4-year-old daughter of the Triple Crown champion Affirmed, and she streaked across the horizon at Belmont Park yesterday like a shooting star. Mossflower stayed undefeated by winning her sixth straight race in the sort of performance that grows with time. She outran five of the finest fillies in the land by 12 lengths and more, closed with a furious rush to break the record for the Hempstead Handicap and came within two-fifths of a second of matching the track record for a mile and one-sixteenth. And she did it all in the first stakes race she ever ran. The true measure of her success might be judged by the caliber of the fillies she outran, in this order: Glitter Woman, who has finished in the money in 15 of her 16 starts; Colonial Minstrel, who had a five-race winning streak; Ajina, last year's 3-year-old champion filly; Dixie Flag, a speed horse who had won three of her last four, and Royal Indy, winner of the Gazelle last summer at Belmont. After half a mile, Mossflower was running dead last in this all-star field, and she was still fourth after three-quarters of a mile. Then they turned into the homestretch, and Robbie Davis called for closing speed. In a flash, Mossflower blew past Dixie Flag and Glitter Woman, shot from fourth place to first, widened her lead to two lengths in the stretch and widened it to major daylight as they neared the wire. She closed her breathtaking performance 12 lengths in front of Glitter Woman, who nosed ...

Fourstardave - "The Sultan Of Saratoga" [02:16]
Fourstardave (1985--2002) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Fans called him "The Sultan of Saratoga" because he'd won at least one race at Saratoga Race Course each year from 1987 to 1994. He died of a heart attack in October 2002 at the age of 17 on the Belmont Park track yet is buried in Claire Court at Saratoga Race Course. This is a rare honor since only three horses are buried there. He died October 14, 2002 after having been shipped to Belmont Park to take part in a post parade of retired New York-breds on New York Showcase Day. Taken out onto the track in early morning to do light training he had a heart attack while trotting the track clockwise. Fourstardave retired having made 99 starts with a record of 21-18-16 and earnings of $1636560. At Saratoga, the fan favorite set a course record of 1:38 4/5 for a mile and a sixteenth. On the turf he was perhaps best, winning 15 races and almost $1 million. Upon his retirement, he was feted at neighboring Siro's Restaurant, where he was presented with an edible key to the city and had the small lane named "Fourstardave Way" in his honor. In his honor and tribute The Daryl's Joy Stakes at Saratoga was changed to the Fourstardave, now a Grade 2 stakes. In 1997 (at the age of 12) he participated in the High Hope Steeplechase at the Kentucky Horse Park in an amateur event for charity, and finished second. en.wikipedia.org

New York Watch: Palice Malice [01:35]
Palace Malice became the first North American winner sired by multiple Horse of the Year Curlin with a dominant 3-½ length maiden score Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. The Dogwood Stable color-bearer will now be pointed for the Grade 2, $300000 Three Chimneys Hopeful on Monday, September 3. Sent out by Saratoga leading trainer Todd Pletcher, Palace Malice was making his second career start. In his debut on July 5 at Belmont Park going five furlongs, the bay colt had a rough trip and raced greenly through the stretch, placing second to the promising Carried Interest by a half length, with 6 ¾ lengths separating him and the third-place finisher. In Saturday's seventh race, an $80000 maiden event at 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt, Palace Malice broke alertly, tracked a swift pace while running three wide down the backstretch, took over on the turn, and cruised home to an easy victory under jockey Javier Castellano, while still running somewhat greenly through the stretch. He paid $2.70 to win for a $2 wager as the overwhelming 1-5 favorite in the field of seven. "We expected him to run well like he did first time out and maybe improve, but you never take anything for granted in this business," said Pletcher, who leads the Saratoga meet with 14 victories through Saturday. "He's still learning, and we were happy to see him win like this. It's exciting to see a colt that is bred the way he is to show the kind of speed that he has, and you would think he would only improve as the ...
