Miss Andretti – Australian Racehorse of the Year
The magnificent Australian racehorse, Miss Andretti, has been setting the horse racing world on fire. Named in honor of the legendary Mario Andretti, this spirited six year old has been living up to the weight of carrying the name of an auto-racing hero. From twenty-two starts, Miss Andretti has won fourteen, and when her name showed up on the nominations list for the Australian Racehorse of the Year no one was surprised. She has grown from strength to strength and has proved herself a formidable opponent and a horse racing powerhouse.

Flashing Red, An Extraordinary Horse
When the owners of Flashing Red bought him four years ago, they could never have imagined the spirit and courage that were part and parcel of this extraordinary racing horse. On 13 November 2007, Flashing Red proved to all his younger competitors that sometimes experience and determination can triumph over age. At the ripe age of ten years, Flashing Red was the oldest horse to step out onto the track. Not only did he have to prove his worth in regard to age, but he was the defending champion of the New Zealand Trotting Cup.

The Development of Appaloosa Racing
The Nez Perce tribe were the first to breed the Appaloosa horse breed. They lived in the Northwest Pacific in America, the Palouse River running through their land. It was because of the river that the settlers who moved into this region named the breed Palouse horses, which later developed to the name of Appaloosa. They were mostly bred as carthorses and farm horses and were not considered favorable to race. But in the late 1900s the almost forgotten horse breed started to make its way onto the horse racing circuit.

Kevin Darley – A Legend Retires
When you have had a long and successful career, as Kevin Darley has, the decision to retire from the sport that is your passion does not come easily. The horse racing community was shocked when Darley announced that he would be hanging up his silks, as they know that they are not only losing one of the worlds’ greatest flat racing jockeys, but a living legend. Kevin Darley decided to draw the final curtain on his horse racing career, and look for a new direction for the future.

Golden Gate Fields’ New Track Surface
The California Horse Racing Board has demanded that its five biggest horse racing tracks have synthetic track surfaces installed before the end of 2007 if they want to continue racing at their establishments. To adhere to the new ruling, $10 million has been spent on the Golden Gate Fields’ new track surface, a revolutionary surface that has already proved its worth at international racecourses such as in Hong Kong, England and Dubai. But it is the first time the Tapeta Footings surface has been installed at a racecourse in Northern California, and it is going to have to make believers out of the critics.
