New Life for Stradbroke Week

The Stradbroke Handicap is a race that has been a part of the Australian racing industry since 1890. It was named in honor of legendary architect Lord Stradbroke, and was catapulted into the premier racing arena when it raised its stakes to $1 000 000 in 1996. Stradbroke Week is known as an event that is focused on racing, and in the year 2000 AAMI became the sponsor of this much anticipated racing event on the Brisbane calendar.

Running of the Exciting Sunshine Millions

Sixteen years ago, Frank Stronach decided to approach the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Inc., the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and the Thoroughbred Owners of California in regard to a race that he envisioned. Along with the assistance of Santa Anita Park and the Gulfstream Park racecourses, the Sunshine Millions was born. As the owner of Magna Entertainment Corp, which oversees and operates many of the most well-known racecourses across the United States, Stronach managed to use his horse racing experience to create a race that has been enjoyed by racing stables, punters, jockeys and spectators through their continued annual support.

The Eagerly Anticipated Dan Patch Awards

In the world of harness racing, the Dan Patch Awards are held in high esteem. Every year, the U.S. Harness Writers Association members cast their votes, with only the names of the three front runners in each division being revealed. The nominees just have to wait patiently to find out on the awards evening if they have succeeded in divisions such as the Horse of the Year, Trotter of the Year and Pacer of the Year. The Dan Patch Awards are only given to the most noteworthy and deserving contributors to the sport of harness racing, be it the horses that win the races, members of the industry, or associate organizations to the harness racing fraternity - they are all noticed and recognised for their efforts.

Coral Welsh National – A Taste of What’s to Come

In 1895 the very first Coral Welsh National, also known as the Welsh Grand National, was raced at the Ely Racecourse. All the races were held here until 1939, when the Ely Racecourse was shut down. But a new venue was found for the 1940 Coral Welsh National, at the Chepstow Racecourse. It has remained here ever since, and has been the scene of many surprising and nail biting finishes. The Welsh Grand National is known to be a difficult and extremely challenging track, sometimes causing both the horses and their jockeys to overcome heart-stopping situations.

Growth of Harness Racing in South Africa

Harness Racing in South Africa is only now started to take off, whereas in Europe, North America, Australasia and Australia harness racing has been enjoyed for many years. Dean Latimer and Swedish based harness racing enthusiast Peter Jansson are working tirelessly to promote this type of horse racing in South Africa. As a new horse racing division, many horse lovers have shown their support and interest in developing the sport.
