It’s a Bird Flies Away with Million Classic
The Sunshine Millions Classic was inaugurated in 1981 and has been a horse racing event that has witnessed magnificent victories, unexpected triumphs and heartbreaking disappointments. On Saturday, 24 January 2009, another field of Sunshine Millions Classic hopefuls entered the starting gates for this $1million event, where four year olds and over get the opportunity to showcase their talents. But this year it was to be dominated by a horse that was sent off at 11-1, and used the Sunshine Millions Classic to make his comeback.

Praise for Master Minded
On Saturday, 18 January 2009, a magnificent horse with the name of Master Minded was in the starting lineup at Ascot Racecourse for the running of the Grade One Victor Chandler Chase. Trained by Paul Nicholls and owned by Clive Smith, Master Minded is stable mates to jumps racing phenomenons Kauto Star and Denman, and seems to be upholding the same presence they command when entering a racing event. Nicholls couldn’t praise Master Minded enough as they enjoyed their victory in the winner’s circle.

Elliott Makes 4000
Many would say that Steward Elliott was born to be a jockey, following in his father’s footsteps and having support from a mother who found her passion in show horses. Born on 1 march 1965, in Canada, Steward Elliott began his career as a jockey in 1981, at the age of sixteen. As most jockeys do, Elliott dreamed of success and victory. On Sunday, 18 January 2008, Elliott crowned his career, exceeding his own expectations once again by raking in his four thousandth victory.

Nicanor Gets Ready for Action
Walking out onto the track for training, his curiosity gets the better of him. He looks at his surroundings, and his intelligence absorbs every moment out on the field. His rider waits patiently for him to indicate that he is ready to work. If one had never seen him and only heard his character described, you would think it was Barbaro out on the track. But it is his full brother, Nicanor, and he is a horse that everyone has very high expectations for. Trainer Michael Matz is aware of the huge shoes that are expected to be filled, but remains reserved in regard to his views of Nicanor.

Ultra Blend Has the Right Combination
It is not surprising that trainer Steve Sherman did not want to make confident statements in regard to Ultra Blend being in the starting gates for the $75 000 Tiburon Stakes, which was held at the Golden Gate Fields on Saturday, 10 January 2008. She is probably one of the calmest and most laid-back fillies on the track today, and during her workout leading up to the race, she didn’t put in too much effort to work. She looked indifferent about her workout session and Sherman was not sure how she would perform during the race. But Ultra Blend proved that when she is called upon to give her best effort, she is prepared to perform beyond expectation.

Hats Off to Gemswick Park
Old Hat was a phenomenal race horse during her time on the track. She became a household name, and in 1964 and 1965 she was crowned the American Champion Older Female Horse. In the six years she spent as a race horse, Old Hat won thirty-five of her eighty career starts and placed eighteen times. It is for her outstanding performances and the highly regarded legacy she left behind that the Old Hat Stakes was named in her honor.
