Indiana Racetracks

There are two major horse racing tracks in Indiana. One being Hoosier Park, located in Anderson, and the other is Indiana Downs, situated just outside Indianapolis in Shelbyville. Both these tracks are relatively new to the horse racing industry, but have developed into state-of-the-art facilities, which are well supported by horsemen and racing enthusiasts. Hoosier Park is the older of the two tracks, having been established in 1994. It is the venue for a number of stakes races, including the Indiana Stallion Stakes, The City of Anderson Stakes, Indiana Breeders’ Cup, the Indiana Futurity and the Indiana Derby. Both standardbred horse racing and thoroughbred horse racing events are hosted by Hoosier Park Racecourse. Indiana Downs Horse Track also accommodates Thoroughbred and Standardbred horse racing, and was founded in 2002. It is a track that boasts two courses, namely a turf course that is seven furlongs in length and the main course, which is a mile long.

All racing in Indiana, and at theses two establishments, is overseen by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. The commission ensures that thoroughbred, quarter horse and standardbred horse racing adheres to the rules of racing, that all wagering is conducted to a high standard, and that horse racing is developed and promoted positively.
