Doncaster Race Course in England
Doncaster Racecourse is best-known for the famous St Leger Stakes which had its beginnings back in 1776, making it the oldest classic horse race in the world. Doncaster's history dates back to the 16th century, however, horse racing was only officially established here in the mid 1700s. The Doncaster Corporation took the lead in supporting racing at the Town Moor offering prizes in the form of money and trophies.
Doncaster Racecourse features a left-handed, pear-shaped flat course measuring around 2 miles. In addition to the flat course is the National hunt course which is a left-handed 2 mile circuit that is mostly flat. Renowned races held at Doncaster Racecourse include the Lincoln Handicap, Park Hill Stakes, Doncaster Cup, Champagne Stakes, Flying Childers Stakes, Racing Post Trophy, November Handicap and the Great Yorkshire Chase amongst the 30 meetings held annually.
Doncaster Racecourse attracts some of the best-known names in the business and has shot many a racehorse into the limelight of fame. The five best sires at Doncaster on wins are Sadler’s Wells, Cadeaux Genereux, Green Desert, Indian Ridge and Danehill.
Following renovations in 2006/2007, a number of excellent new facilities have been made available to racegoers, including a five-story grandstand, exhibition center, private boxes, restaurants and bars. Brand new stables mean race horses will have only the best lodging. Also on the cards are a hotel and new Bloodstock Sales facility.
England’s Doncaster Racecourse can be reached along the M18 motorway. The directions are well signposted. Three buses run between Doncaster Central train station and the racecourse, providing easy access. So why not plan a visit to Doncaster Racecourse when it opens with the St. Leger Stakes in 2007.
