There is a rags to riches story behind this fabulous racetrack and gaming resort. Mountaineer Race Track started out under the name of Waterford Park which was established some time ago. Although the track was initially quite successful, it had become somewhat run-down and unpopular by the time investors started to look at it in 1990. Eventually the decision to purchase the track was made and by the end of the year, the track had begun a major turn-around. Firstly, the track’s name was changed to Mountaineer Race Track. After this, efforts were made to improve the existing facilities and to increase annual turnover. Not long afterwards, the track was authorized to have slot machines installed and this was done in 1994. This proved to be a major boost to the track since the 3200 slots not only drew more people to the track but increased the tracks revenue. Before long, a hotel resort was developed around the track and the profits made through both the hotel and the casino were put into bigger race purses. This drew better competition which made for more exciting thoroughbred racing and within a relatively short period of time the track built up a reputation for not only being a good track, but for providing top entertainment and racing facilities.
The Mountaineer Race Track has two tracks. The main track is a one mile oval track with a dirt surface. There is a turf course inside the main track which measures seven furlongs in length. Though the track offers great live horse racing for much of the racing season, it also offers simulcast racing for those who just cant get enough of the action. The track hosts many stakes and overnight handicaps and it is currently being considered as a possible host for a future Breeder’s Cup event. So come to Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming Resort and enjoy this great racing facility for yourself.
